Between May 11 and 13, Helena Wajnman, Director of RIL Brazil, traveled to Wilton Park, United Kingdom, to participate in an international meeting promoted by Google and the UK government on artificial intelligence in governments across emerging economies. The event brought together leaders from Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East to discuss how governments can adopt AI with a focus on the public interest.
One of the main points of consensus was that the challenge is no longer whether governments will use artificial intelligence, but how to do so strategically, ethically, and in ways that generate real impact on people’s lives.
Throughout the sessions, participants discussed topics such as cultural transformation in the public sector, peer learning among municipalities, scalability of solutions, and building public trust in the use of AI. The importance of local governments playing a more active role in this agenda was also highlighted, since they are responsible for managing many of the services that directly impact people’s daily lives.
Participation in Wilton Park made it possible to exchange knowledge with international leaders and strengthen the work already being carried out across the region alongside local governments. Programs such as the AI Challenge, the Coalition of Cities for Responsible AI (CIIAR), and Governments in the Age of AI seek to support municipalities in training, governance, and the implementation of artificial intelligence in public management.
The trip opened new opportunities for international collaboration to continue building capacities in local governments and to promote an AI adoption approach centered on people, ethics, and institutional strengthening.
